Hirundo Field Trip

The fifth grade team will be involved in a project at Hirundo Wildlife Refuge again this year. The project is a continuation of the one that was started six years ago.
Our project will involve canoeing to collect fresh-water mussel shells for a research project on mercury content in our waterways. While we are canoeing, we will also be checking other statistics having to do with the quality and traits of the water. The entire day will be spent working with scientists and as scientists!
Due to the large number of fifth grade students, each classroom will be traveling to Hirundo on a separate day. This will ensure that each child gets to paddle, collect mussels, complete data charts, and work as a team toward one common goal. Instruction on safety and paddling will be provided by the staff at Hirundo and the registered Maine Guides accompanying us each day.
We will be using two large war canoes for this field trip (they seat many people and are very sturdy).
Appropriate footwear and clothing will be essential for this trip to be successful. Please be sure that your child is dressed for the weather and has appropriate footwear for wetlands. Open-toed shoes will not be permitted. You may want to send extra socks or pants with your child as well. We cannot guarantee the weather or conditions of the trails. We will cancel if the weather is not appropriate.
The dates for each classroom are as follows:
*Mrs. Daniel-Monday, October 3 *Ms. LaFrance-Tuesday, October 4 *Mrs. Moran-Wednesday, October 5 *Mrs. Gerrish-Thursday, October 6 *Ms. St Peter-Friday, October 7
